I have the pleasure of interviewing them on the evening before the grand opening at the Scuffletown. Their excitement was genuinely contagious. Hearing their stories of being in the worst of situations but always remembering to serve well is inspiring. Your Grandma always wants to hear from you. I will definitely make her blush sometimes with the things I share, but she won’t be afraid to tell you what she thinks. If she is anything like my Grandma, she will be ready to talk to you about those most intriguing things you find. You might hear a new story that you’ve never heard before.

Your Neighbor might not be your favorite when they decide to mow their lawn a bit too early on a Saturday morning, but they do watch your cat when you go out of town. Show your appreciation to them by not subscribing them to a “Krispy Kreme Bathing Suit Calendar”. Share this subscription with them instead.

Your Hairstylist is always looking for new things to talk to people about. She has a captive audience and while she does like to hear about their kids sometimes she like to talk about cool things that she is interested in as well.

Bartenders are some of the most attentive people who can spot various and sundry situations that we don’t always understand. They can use novel ideas to help sus out the good people who are around them. I bet they will enjoy at least the music but who knows, they might find even more treasure here.

There are many ways that we meet our neighbors. One of the most common ways to connect is through our pets and their interactions. Meeting new people at a dog park can have some advantages but the most obvious to me was the fact that there is a common interest, dogs.

When I turned 30 I made a goal that by the time I was 35 I would be in shape and in some sort of martial arts competition. I have yet to compete, but I have dropped 100lbs and started learning Jiu Jitsu at Rilion Gracie Jiu Jitsu in downtown Greer. Jiu Jitsu is a grappling martial art that attempts to bring an opponent to submission via various chokes or joint locks.

Patience and determination are one thing when it is some sort of academic or work endeavor. It is a whole new idea when your being smashed by a guy that weighs 275lbs. While it may sound strange, there is a beauty in the fight for life. Not every day is a dramatic fight like in a competition or confrontation, yet the lessons learned about life on the mat are well remembered.

Keep fighting today. You're not alone.

Mr. Rogers’s mom used to tell him that in times of trouble, “Look to the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

Those are welcoming words from an amazing mother.

Well first thing first I am bringing something new to the Internet. That is my little Upstate.

Yes we have internet. Yes they have their own websites and social media pages. But, I think you are missing something. I think that you might be missing a lot.

This is where the idea of Neg4tive Sp4ce came to me. Often when we see art we can sometimes miss the point while looking at all the details. Sometimes though there is a negative space that the artist intentionally puts into their piece.

Life is art in motion. That means that sometimes when we look at someone's life we are looking at a single moment. But there is a life time of negative space that we are unaware of. Context that makes the picture more whole.

Looking at those people in my community who may, at first glance, not be hiding much while they contain a lifetime of negative space that can enlighten us. So, let's go meet some of our neighbors.

This might seem like a bit of a hodgepodge of interviews with people somewhat disconnected from one another. One week we might talk to an electrical engineer while the next we will talk to a local school teacher. One week we may actually talk to a neighbor of mine that I see most days and make sure I give a hearty hello to. Not every week will be dominated by your interest. That's ok. You know what thread ties all these people together? My little Upstate.
