I have the pleasure of interviewing them on the evening before the grand opening at the Scuffletown. Their excitement was genuinely contagious. There are many ways that we meet our neighbors. One of the most common ways to connect is through our pets and their interactions. Meeting new people at a dog park can have some advantages but the most obvious to me was the fact that there is a common interest, dogs.

When I turned 30 I made a goal that by the time I was 35 I would be in shape and in some sort of martial arts competition. I have yet to compete, but I have dropped 100lbs and started learning Jiu Jitsu at Rilion Gracie Jiu Jitsu in downtown Greer. Jiu Jitsu is a grappling martial art that attempts to bring an opponent to submission via various chokes or joint locks.

Patience and determination are one thing when it is some sort of academic or work endeavor. It is a whole new idea when your being smashed by a guy that weighs 275lbs. While it may sound strange, there is a beauty in the fight for life. Not every day is a dramatic fight like in a competition or confrontation, yet the lessons learned about life on the mat are well remembered.

Keep fighting today. You're not alone.
